Robert (‘Clive of India’) Clive, Baron Clive
1725–74
Army officer, merchant, and colonial administrator. Led a number of successful military campaigns in India. Governor of the East India Company’s territory in Bengal, 1757–60, 1765. MP for Shrewsbury, 1760–74. Created Baron Clive, 1762.
