Charles Flahault
1852–1935
French botanist. Studied at Amiens. Assistant gardener, Jardin des plantes, Paris, from 1872; a protégé of Philippe van Tieghem. Doctorat ès sciences, 1878. Travelled with Gaston Bonnier in Sweden, Norway, Lapland, and England, 1879–80. Professor, Faculté des sciences de Montpellier, 1883–1927, travelling in central Europe, North Africa, the Mediterranean region, the Massif central, and the Alps. Founder and director of the Institut botanique, Montpellier, 1890. Professor of botany, Strasbourg, 1919–27. Particularly known for his work in phytogeography.
