Isabella Gair Rose Romanes (1835–1873)
1810–83
Scottish. Daughter of the Rev. Robert Smith, parish minister of Cromarty, Scotland, and brother of John Smith, minister in Beckwith, Ontario, Canada. Married George Romanes (1806–71), minister at Smith Falls, Ontario, in Beckwith in 1835. Mother of George John Romanes, who was born in Kingston, Ontario, where his father was appointed to a post at Queen’s College in 1846. The family returned to Britain after George Romanes came into a substantial inheritance in 1848.
