John Richard Green
1837–83
Historian. BA, Oxford, 1859. Ordained priest, 1861; worked for a decade in poor London parishes and began to do social work as well, but resigned his living in 1869. Librarian, Lambeth Palace, 1869–77. Began writing articles and reviews for the Saturday Review in 1867. Wrote the popular history Short history of the English people (1874). Made innovative use of geography and archaeology in his more scholarly work, The making of England (1882).
