Isabella Lucy Bird
1831–1904
Traveller and writer. Attempted to cure her spinal complaint by living an open-air life. Travelled to North America in 1854 and 1857; New Zealand, Australia, and the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) in 1872; China and Japan in 1876; India in 1889; Iran and Kurdistan in 1890; and Korea in 1894. Married John Bishop (d. 1886) in 1881. Published accounts of her travels.
