Eleanor Mildred Balfour
1845–1936
College head. Sister of Arthur James and Francis Maitland Balfour. Studied mathematics at home. Married Henry Sidgwick (1838–1900) in 1876; they both campaigned for women’s higher education and were interested in psychical research. Collaborated with John William Strutt (Lord Rayleigh) in his work on measurement of electricity. Vice-principal of Newnham College, Cambridge, 1880–91; principal, 1891–1910.
