1831–1911

Jamaican-born journalist and writer. Daughter of William George Stewart, island secretary of Jamaica. Married an army officer, George Robert Barker (1817–61), in 1852 and became Lady Barker when he was knighted in 1859. Lived in New Zealand after her marriage to Frederick Napier Broome (1842–96) in 1865. Returned to London in 1868 and earned a living as a magazine editor and author. Published a number of successful accounts of colonial life, including Station life in New Zealand (1870). Became Lady Broome when Broome was knighted in 1884.
