John Lloyd Stephens

1805–52

American lawyer, travel writer, and railroad executive. Practised law in New York, circa 1826–34. Wrote books based on travels in the Mediterranean, eastern Europe, Chiapas, Yucatan, and Central America. Vice-president, then president, of Panama Railroad from 1849.
