Evangelinus Apostolides Sophocles
1805–83
Greek-born scholar of Greek in the United States. Educated in Cairo and Greece. Emigrated to the US in 1826. Taught Greek, Mount Pleasant Classical Institute, 1830–40; high school, Hartford, Conn.; Yale College, 1837–42. Tutor at Harvard University, 1842–9; assistant professor, 1849–60; professor of ancient, Byzantine, and modern Greek, 1860–83.
