Joseph Smit
1836–1929
Dutch zoological illustrator. Worked for Hermann Schegel at the natural history museum in Leyden. Invited to London by Philip Lutley Sclater; settled there with his family in 1866. Worked on Sclater’s Exotic ornithology (1866–9). Worked with Joseph Wolf on many bird and animal books; after Wolf’s death, became the leading mammal illustrator in England. Worked on illustrations for the Transactions and Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, Ibis, Nature, Field, and the Catalogue of the birds in the collection of the British Museum (1874–98).
