Scottish-born statesman, lawyer, reformer, and educationalist. A founder of the Edinburgh Review, 1802, the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, 1826, and London University, 1826. Prolific author. Lord chancellor, 1830–4. A founder of the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science, 1857. Elected chancellor of Edinburgh University, 1859. Created Baron Brougham and Vaux, 1830. FRS 1803.
