Augustus Henry Pitt-Rivers (1880–1900)
1827–1900
Archaeologist and anthropologist. Educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and commissioned into the Grenadier Guards in 1845. Became interested in archaeology during his military career and after 1867 concentrated on field excavation. Inspector of ancient monuments, 1882. FRS 1876. Adopted the name Pitt-Rivers in 1880 when he inherited a large estate, Rushmore, in Cranborne Chase, Wiltshire.
