1807–91

Evangelical Anglican clergyman. BA, Cambridge (Trinity College), 1828; fellow, Trinity College, 1829–40. Ordained priest, 1836; consecrated bishop, 1847; bishop of Melbourne, Australia, 1848–76. Secured independent constitutions for the Anglican churches in the colonies. Supporter of the Church Missionary Society. An advocate of clerical education known for his sermons discussing biblical criticism and scientific issues. Helped found Ridley Hall, Cambridge, in 1881.
