James Jackson Jarves

1818–88

American journalist, diplomat, and art connoisseur. Lived on the Hawaiian islands at intervals from 1839 until 1851. Editor of a newspaper, the Polynesian, and author of books on the Hawaiian islands. Special commissioner to the king of Hawaii, Kamehameha III, in negotiating a treaty with the US in 1849. Went to Europe in 1851, living in Paris and Florence, where he wrote on and collected art. US vice-consul in Florence, 1880–2.
