Karl Ewald Konstantin (Ewald) Hering
1834–1918
German physiologist and psychologist. MD, Leipzig, 1858; lecturer in medical physiology, 1862. Professor of physiology, Vienna, 1865–70; Prague, 1870–95; Leipzig, 1895–1918. In 1870, in a lecture on memory as a general function of organised matter, he postulated that since memory survives periods of unconsciousness, it must be inherent in brain substance and be regarded as a material process.
