François Pierre Guillaume (François) Guizot
1787–1874
French historian and statesman. Professor of modern history at the Sorbonne, 1812–30. Suspended from teaching, 1822–8, because of his political writing. After 1814, held a number of offices in the interior ministry; elected to the chamber of deputies to represent Lisieux in Normandy, 1830, and made minister for the interior. Education minister, 1832–6; foreign minister from 1840 until the revolution of 1848.
