Henry John Elwes

1846–1922

Natural historian and traveller. Entered the Scots Guards in 1865; retired with rank of captain, 1870. Visited Sikkim and Tibet, 1871. Travelled extensively and collected plants, butterflies, and moths. Known for his skill as a plantsman, he collected several new species that bear his name. FRS 1897.
