Physician and mesmerist. MD, Edinburgh University, 1810, Cambridge University, 1821. Professor of the principles and practice of medicine, University College, London, 1832–9. Senior physician, University College Hospital, 1834–9. Founded the London Phrenological Society in 1823. Practised mesmerism from 1837. Founded the Zoist, devoted to mesmerism and phrenology, in 1843. Had one of the largest private medical practices in London. Credited with introducing the stethoscope to England. FRS 1829.
