Charles Elliot
1801–75
Naval officer and colonial governor. Entered the navy in 1815, lieutenant, 1822, commander of a hospital ship, 1826, post rank, 1828. After 1828, served in the foreign or colonial office, including posts in Guiana, China during the opium war, and Texas. Served as governor of Bermuda, 1846–54, of Trinidad, 1854–6, and of St Helena, 1863–9. In retirement received honorary naval promotions, including admiral in 1865. Knighted, 1856.
