1842–94
Scottish botanist and entomologist. MD, Edinburgh, 1864, but did not practise. Founder member, Perthshire Society of Natural Science, 1867; president, 1867–72. Founder and editor, Scottish Naturalist, 1871–82. Founder and secretary, Cryptogamic Society of Scotland, 1874. Wrote the report on pelagic Hemiptera for the Challenger expedition, and on the flora and fauna of Perthshire.
