Goldwin Smith

1823–1910

Historian, journalist, and essayist. Law fellow at University College, Oxford, 1846–67; called to the bar, 1850, but became tutor at University College, also writing for the Saturday Review and other newspapers. Regius professor of modern history, Oxford University, 1858–66; honorary professor of history, Cornell University, 1868. Moved to Toronto in 1871. Wrote for the Canadian Monthly and the Nation, and founded several Canadian newspapers. Liberal activist and controversialist.
