Annie Besant

1847–1933

Campaigner for contraception, socialist, theosophist, and politician in India. Lost her faith and separated from her clergyman husband in 1873. With Charles Bradlaugh, wrote and spoke publicly on freethought issues, including contraception, 1875–86. Became interested in socialist ideas, and later theosophy, in the 1880s. Lived in India from 1893; president of the Theosophical Society from 1907. Campaigned for self-rule for India; joined the Indian National Congress in 1913.
