James Cowles Prichard

1786–1848

Physician and ethnologist. MD, Edinburgh, 1808. Studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, and St John’s and Trinity Colleges, Oxford. Physician, Bristol Infirmary, until 1843. In Researches into the physical history of man (1813), maintained that human races were varieties of one species. A commissioner of lunacy in London, 1845. FRS 1827.
