Edward Vansittart Neale

1810–92

Christian socialist. Called to the bar, 1837. Keenly interested in social reform. Founded the first London co-operative stores. Established the Central Co-operative Agency in 1851, to promote the cause of co-operation, which he believed would improve the condition of the working classes. Devoted his wealth and energies to the co-operative movement throughout his life.
