German psychiatrist. Passsed the state medical examination, Berlin, 1851; chief physician, Berlin, 1857; habilitated in 1858. Director, psychiatric section of St Georg hospital, Hamburg, 1859; director, Friedrichsberg psychiatric hospital, 1864. Professor of psychiatry, Göttingen, 1866. Introduced more humane methods of treatment and promoted a no-restraint policy in German psychiatric institutions.
