John Denis Macdonald
1826–1908
Naval medical officer and biologist. Trained at Cork school of medicine and King’s College, London. Entered the navy as assistant surgeon in 1849. Served on the Herald, 1852–9. Professor of naval hygiene, Netley, 1872. Deputy inspector general, 1875; inspector general, 1880. Head, Royal Naval Hospital, Plymouth, 1883–6. FRS 1859.
