Brian Houghton Hodgson

Diplomat and Nepalese scholar. In the service of the East India Company from 1816; assistant resident in Nepal, 1820; resident, 1833–43. Acquired an important collection of Sanskrit and Tibetan manuscripts. Wrote extensively on the geography, ethnography, and natural history of India and the Himalayas. Lived in Darjeeling, 1845–58; thereafter settled in England. FRS 1877.
