Scottish physician and physiologist; a specialist on diseases of the liver. Surgeon and physician at the Edinburgh Infirmary, 1850–1; studied physiology and chemistry in France, 1851–3, and Germany, 1853–5. Curator of the anatomical museum and lecturer in practical physiology and histology, University College, London, 1855; professor of medical jurisprudence, 1859; physician, University College Hospital, 1860. FRS 1865.
