Charles Stewart Hardinge, 2d viscount Hardinge
1822–94
Politician. An accident in youth meant Hardinge had to use an artificial leg and was prevented from following his intended profession in the army. Accompanied his father, Henry Hardinge, when he was appointed governor-general of India, as his private secretary, 1844–8. MP for Downpatrick, 1851–6. Under-secretary for war, 1858–9. Appointed trustee of the National Portrait Gallery in 1868; chairman of the trustees, 1876–94.
