Writer on music and lexicographer. Apprenticed as a civil engineer, 1836; worked as a civil engineer, 1839–50. Secretary of the Society of Arts, 1850–2. Secretary to the Crystal Palace Company, 1852–73; a director, 1873–8. Originated the Palestine Exploration Fund, 1865. Edited Macmillan’s Magazine, 1868–83. Edited the Dictionary of music and musicians (1878–89). Director of the Royal College of Music, 1882–94. Knighted, 1883.
