Philip Henry Gosse

1810–88

Zoologist, traveller, and writer. Collected zoological specimens in the West Indies for the British Museum, 1844–6. Made his living as a writer from 1847. Lived at St Marychurch, near Torquay, Devonshire, from 1857. Cultivated orchids. Studied marine invertebrates. FRS 1856.
