William Erskine

1773–1852

Historian and orientalist. Clerk and magistrate in Bombay; master in equity in the recorder’s court of Bombay, 1820. Accused of defalcation and removed from his offices, 1823. Provost of St Andrews, 1836–9. Resided in Edinburgh for most of his later years.
