Jefferson Davis

1808–89

American statesman. As senator, announced the secession of Mississippi from the Union in 1861; became president of the Confederacy in the same year. Remained president until the fall of the Confederacy and his own capture by unionists in 1865. Advocated an independent Southern American nation.
