Dec 25 1869
Dear Sir
I thank you sincerely for your very kind present received yesterday, & I congratulate you on the production of your work which must have cost you so much labour, & which I trust will prove a memorable event in our science—1
The plates are magnificent & extremely clear. I almost daily regret that I am not a better German scholar but I must endeavour to understand your views.
With my best thanks I beg leave to remain | My dear Sir | yours very faithfully | Ch. Darwin
